A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to snag a mystery box from Pick Your Plum. If you aren’t familiar with PYP, you’re missing out! Each day they sell one fantastic craft supply at an insanely low price. Occasionally, they sell mystery boxes crammed full of craft supplies for $30.00 (or at least the one I bought was thirty). It is money well spent. I got a ton of stuff, including 100 yards of premium ribbon, some beautiful scrapbook paper, a lovely magnet board, a lace camisole/shirt and some ethereal feathers on gold wire. That’s only the tip of the iceberg! (They haven’t asked me to write this, I was just so impressed I couldn’t help myself.)
I decided to put the ribbon and feathers to good use (and it was so much ribbon, I didn’t barely make a dent in the roll) and create some pretty Easter decor. (Also, I’m using my new big girl camera and I’m obviously still learning. Be gentle. 😉 )
I started out by gathering my supplies and measuring the dining room table.
My dining room table was approximately 62″ long as you can see in the picture below. I added 24″ to that so I’d have around a foot hanging over the edge of the table on each side.
Using my cutting mat and rotary cutter I cut five 86″ strips of ribbon.

Next, I used my acrylic ruler to space out my ribbon strips evenly, leaving one inch between each one. Hubby helped me adjust the ribbon so there would be a foot “tail” on each end of the table.

Then, I cut some 9″ strips of ribbon to weave between the long lengths of ribbon. I just used scrap-booking tape runner to tack down the ribbon. I’m not going to lie to you here, this is not something that my grandchildren will receive in some heirloom box. I didn’t make it to last, I made it to be pretty for a season or two and then re-purpose the ribbon. I’m totally OK with that.

And I started weaving, and cutting more 9″ strips. Weaving and cutting, weaving and cutting until I had covered the middle two sections of my table.

When I was done, I laid my acrylic ruler down along the edges of the outside ribbons and trimmed off any uneven bits with my rotary cutter.

After I was done evening up the edges, I gently flipped up the outside strips of ribbon and finished tacking everything down with double stick tape.

To add to the look and create a centerpiece, I grabbed one of our wedding gifts, a gorgeous glass pedestal bowl. I filled it with some plastic Easter eggs I picked up at the craft store earlier this week. I’ll be using some of the leftover eggs later this weekend in an unexpected way. Don’t worry, I’ll share and hopefully you’ll get a good laugh.

It was only fitting that I utilized more of my Pick Your Plum box contents, so I took one of the two rolls of feathers and snipped them carefully from their wire string. All I did from there was gently tuck them around the edge of the bowl between the eggs. I thought it was a nice alternative to the more traditional Easter grass.

Insert gratuitous fancy big girl camera close up shot here:

To complete the look I added some napkin bunnies. You can find how to make these cuties HERE.

Here’s an extended view:

I’m pretty pleased with the results. I’ll admit to you that I left the ends of the ribbon raw and they’ve started to fray a bit. I plan to trim them a bit and apply some anti-fray to keep it from continuing. It was a fairly simple project and took me about an hour from start to finish. Ignore the cutting board slated for another project sitting in the dining room chair. 😉
Well, what do you think? Do you decorate for Easter? Leave me a comment. I love hearing from you!

  1. What a cute table runner. I’m going to plan this as a weekend activity with the kiddos. Thanks for sharing at the This Is How We Roll Link Party.
