Last year around this time I set a goal for myself. I promised myself that I would participate in The Nester’s 31 days of Blogging series and write for 31 straight days – the entire month of October. Lately, our lives have been kind of crazy and I have to tell you that I’m more than a little afraid to undertake this challenge right now, but I’m going to do it anyway. I just need one little thing from you – encouragement. I’m a bit…daunted. But I think I can do it if you all are with me. You’re with me right? 😉

Now, on to my topic. I have a not-so-secret secret. I’m one of those crazy coupon ladies you see on TV, only without the TV production crew, coupon fraud and house full of products I’ll never use. Intrigued? Keep reading.

Here’s the thing: What you see on TV is heavily staged. HEAVILY. There are things you don’t see. Things like TV producers persuading grocery stores to allow 50 of the same coupon in one shopping trip, buying extra coupons and having them delivered to these crazy coupon ladies so they’ll look like they have a mountain of coupons they lovingly and devotedly clip day in and day out, and stores violating their own corporate coupon policies just to get a little publicity. The honest truth is that you can’t do what you see those women do on TV, because they didn’t do it. The rooms full of product you see? All real. But the truth of the matter is that it took years to get that kind of stockpile. Truly…years. Do you have that kind of time and space? I don’t. But I do consistently save at the very least 40% and at the most 97% (yes, really – I have proof) on my grocery and household purchases and can plan a month of meals in advance – without giving up real estate in my living room for 80 boxes of ramen and 400 sports drinks.

Family and friends now call me a coupon expert and they often come to me when they’re looking to save big because they know that I’ve done the research (I can’t tell you how many books on couponing I’ve read, how many blogs I follow) and when I’m on my game, I save big. So, what better topic could I write about for a solid month than something I’m incredibly passionate about?  I figure that if I’m going to do this housewife thing as my career rather than working outside the home, then I have to find ways to save money since I’m not bringing any in.

I’m not extreme, I’m sensible. I do it, and so can you.

Couponing isn’t your thing? No worries, a lot of what I do has nothing to do with clipping coupons.

So, are you with me? I can’t wait to get started. Later today we’ll talk about how I organize my coupons and supplies (and how you don’t need to spend a dime to do it!)

Also coming up this week (This month won’t be ALL coupons and no DIY, promise):
