Alright, so you’ve been diligent, scrimping and saving but you’re feeling deprived. You deserve to spend some of that money you’ve saved…key word: some. Let’s not get crazy here.

Even I have days (weeks) when I feel a little deprived. Sometimes I want to splurge and pay full price (ok, maybe not full price). I may claim to be cheap, but don’t get me wrong, I love the nice things in life – like say, my affinity for Coach bags. ๐Ÿ˜‰ There’s a trick to knowing when to take the low end route and knowing when it’s OK to splurge on high end product.

For me, shoes have to be high quality. Rather than buying a 50ยข pair of flip flops (a weakness even now that I live in the north), I pay $30 or 40 bucks on Reefs. Why? Because I live on my feet. We all do. I don’t go nuts and buy Jimmy Choo’s, but I buy good quality shoes that’ll last me awhile. It’s worth it to pay more up front. Bottom line – You’re not really saving anything if you’re buying three or more pairs of cheap shoes (a pair you wear often, like daily) because they’re wearing out and need to be replaced often. You’ll end up spending more!

Personally, I think it’s better to buy high end products for the things that are your workhorses. For example, I hate paying full price (or insane amounts of money) for clothing, but I let my husband splurge on good quality suits and dress clothes for work. Why? Those suits will last him for years. Sometimes a big investment up front is cheaper than several small investments down the line.

On the other hand, I’ve recently acquired an obsession for cosmetics. Now, I’m no fashion and beauty icon (I’m more of a yoga pants and messy bun icon…just so you know), and I cannot fathom spending forty, fifty, or sixty dollars on foundation. The washer and dryer love me just fine without make up. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Truthfully, I really only wear full make up occasionally, so I can’t see spending a ton to look fabulous. Fortunately, I recently discovered that there are entire blogs devoted to getting fantastic deals on drugstore cosmetics (and the high end stuff!) Two of my favorites are Beauty Broadcast (blog and youtube channel) and Nouveau Cheap. What I love about both of these ladies is that they are committed to never settling for poor quality and at the same time, not spending a fortune. Beauty Broadcast even has a YouTube channel full of reviews and tutorials! And they both find low cost matches for high end product shades. Because of both of them, I now have a drawer of high quality, inexpensive make up that works beautifully (One of my favorite brands is E.l.f. – you can find it at www.eyeslipsface.com and Target!)

So, what’s the bottom line here? It’s OK to spend a good chunk of money on something that will (and should) last you a long time. I still do my best to get a deal whenever I buy, but I recognize that sometimes, high end does mean better quality and in the long run spending good money up front means that I won’t spend more money down the line. On the flip side, don’t limit yourself to only high end products. Be open minded and be willing to accept a low end product if the quality is comparable to the same high end product. Your wallet will thank you on both counts.
