Wise Women

A few weeks ago, hubby and I made the short trek to Pennsylvania for his family reunion. I absolutely adore all of his aunts. So much so, that I wanted to share an exchange I had with his Aunt Margaret. She sat sewing in the shade (hand sewing tiny little stitches onto a piece of clothing…I only wish my stitches were that refined) and as I sat down she asked how we were doing. I said we were doing well, and that I was keeping very busy with our new house. Here’s how it went:Me: Oh we’re fine, we bought a house, so that’s been keeping us busy. And Adam is working longer hours now that he commutes an hour to work. So he gets up really early and heads off to work…Aunt Margaret: And then you get up and head to work.Me: Oh, no, no I don’t work anymore…Aunt Margaret: Yes, you…

Going Paperless in the Kitchen

A few days ago, Katie from Gadanke.com posted a link to how she and her hubby Martin went paperless in their kitchen and it hit me that we’ve made some changes in our kitchen too – but we’ve yet to go paper towel-less. What a great way to cut back further on our budget! Here’s what we’ve done so far:For general cleaning, dusting and shining up glass I use these – Evercare Microfiber Cleaning Cloths. I use the thick, green ones for dusting, the yellow one for glass, the pink one for furniture polishing and I use the blue one for bathrooms. I love that they’re color coded and that they clean so thoroughly. Because of them, I no longer use paper towels to clean.Click Here for SourceNext up we have the Tekla towel from Ikea. It’s basically just a flour sack type towel but they are amazingly well made and…

Sunday Pinspiration #6 – Shower Cleaner Review

This weekend I thought I’d do something a little different with Sunday Pinspiration. I thought I’d show you something I found on Pinterest and actually tried! If you want to try it yourself, please click the link below the picture to get the recipe and repin it yourself from there. :)Awhile back, I found this pin on Pinterest:Source: lifecraftsandwhatever.blogspot.com via Christina on PinterestWhich led me to the recipe for the tub and shower cleaner here:Source: food.com via Christina on PinterestIt boasts that a simple mixture of Dawn detergent and white vinegar works better than any store bought cleanser on showers and soap scum. I’m always up for saving some money so I thought I’d give it a try and then let you all know how it went. I’m willing to be a guinea pig for you. I got your back, yo. ;)First, let’s get right to what you really want…

Monday Morning Thoughts

I was enjoying my pumpkin spice coffee and thought I’d spend a few minutes sharing some time with y’all this morning. We survived Irene and were actually really lucky. We just had some wind and rain. We’re pretty far inland though and realize that not everyone in our state and the states around us were so lucky. Our prayers are definitely with everyone effected by the storm. As a matter of fact, the only injury we had this weekend was when The Hubs sliced the tip of his finger off using the mandolin slicer. Thank heavens we both have first aid training, it was a little gruesome. I still think we should’ve gone to urgent care, but he’s a guy. 😉 Thankfully today it’s looking much better. So now he’s off to work and I took a couple of days off from tutoring to get a few things done now that my students are back in…

My Followers are Brilliant

So after my “update” last week a couple of you left encouraging words and for that I can’t thank you enough. One stuck out:”I hope the festivities of the holiday helped. I know things like that can help me stop for a moment and take a breath. A few things you can do is make a list of everything you haven’t gotten done and play the “what is the worst that can happen” game. Puts things into perspective. Then make a list of all your blessings, including your favorite physical and personal traits. Maybe even have your husband make one too and share together. Hopefully this can give you the little boost you need.”Haley, you are brilliant! I love this idea. If you get or have a blog, girl let me know and I’ll feature you. What a simple way to gain some perspective and remind yourself of all the…

I Think I’m Falling in Love

When I lost my job due to the economy, I was really sad. Teaching wasn’t just a job for me, it was who I was; my purpose, my life. I cried for a week solid. I kid you not. I went through mood swings and sadness and insomnia. (My poor husband.) What would I do now? The one thing I felt worst about was that I had lost my purpose. I have always felt that teaching was my calling. It was the one thing I was supposed to do with my life. And maybe that’s the case. But I have to tell you a secret…I think I have found a new one. And I am in love.I never thought I’d say this…and…it’s almost hard to do so. I…am falling in love…with…Ready?…being a *gulp* housewife.Whew. There, I said it. But seriously folks, I really kind of do like being at home. I…

How did I get here?

The simple answer to that would be that I got married, but really, it’s not that simple. In July, I married the man I have loved since I was 19. (I’m 31 now, so you can begin recommending me for sainthood at any time… 😉 ) Within a month, I lost my job and had no prospects of finding a new one. I’m a teacher, so losing a job 2 weeks before you’re supposed to return to one doesn’t really afford you the opportunity to teach somewhere else that year. I am truly blessed that I can work if I want to and we can afford to have me at home, but it is definitely new territory for me and it has not been easy. So, that’s why I’m “accidental”. I didn’t just fall into being a housewife, but it’s definitely the life I didn’t “plan”. Up until now, I had worked…
