Six Sisters Stuff – Slow Cooker French Dip Sandwiches – A Review

Y’all, I’m going to cut right to the chase on this one. These were Adam’s words exactly, “We should really do this more often.” This is from a man who LOVES his Steak’ems. Huge endorsement from him. For reals. While I like the flavor of his beloved Steak’ems, they probably aren’t the healthiest thing to be shoving down our gullet, which is why I love this recipe from Six Sisters. They couldn’t be easier to make (um slow cooker anyone?) and you can literally pair them with anything! We’ve done chips, potato salad (his mom’s recipe – I’ll share that on the blog soon), regular green salad or a steamed veggie. So easy! And best of all, it’s all real, identifiable ingredients! No weird processed, flattened meat something. You can find their recipe here: 8 Slow Cooker Freezer Meals: Make 8 Meals in One Hour! Since it’s just the two of us around here,…

Six Sisters’ Stuff Slow Cooker Chicken Broccoli Alfredo: A Review

Hey y’all. I’m back with another review from our foray into freezer cooking. This time, it’s another recipe from Six Sisters’ Stuff. Before I begin, I have to mention that in our first round of freezer cooking the recipes we used came mostly from Six Sisters. If it seems like I’m sticking with them, I am. For now. They offered the most simple, easy to follow recipes that included ingredients that I generally have on hand and can afford. Definitely a plus for this girl! You know I’m all about simplifying this year. I will be branching out on our next freezer cooking day, which I think will be in March. I’m already gathering new recipes! Make sure you follow my freezer cooking board on Pinterest. Now, onto the recipe. Y’all, I really wanted to love this one. I really did. Hubby and I love pasta. We don’t often…

Six Sisters’ Stuff Hearty Beef Stew: A Review

Hey y’all! A few of you said you might want reviews of the freezer cooking recipes we’re trying and I’m more than happy to oblige. We tried our first one last week and I’m happy to report it was fantastic! The Hearty Beef Stew recipe from Six Sisters’ Stuff is pretty much everything you want in a good beef stew. The beef gets nice and tender; it melts in your mouth really. The stew base is nice and thick and perfect for dipping bread or crackers into. And y’all, it makes a ton! For hubby and I, it made a good two full meals. Obviously if you have a bigger family you’ll need to keep that in mind. I would say it feeds four comfortably. Now, if I’m being honest, and y’all know I am, my only pet peeve is that in the recipe, it states to slice the carrots. Hubby fired up…

Freezer Cooking Part 2 – How it went, and what we’d do differently next time

Missed the first post on Freezer Cooking? Click here to read how I planned and get links to the resources I used.Hey y’all, as promised I’m back to share how our freezer cooking day went last Saturday. I’m happy to say it went really well! Of course, as with anything, going forward there are things we’d probably do differently. I thought I would take some time in this post to share what worked, what didn’t and what we’re planning for future freezer cooking sessions (yes, there will be more!).Let’s start with what worked:Using the planning forms from Money Saving Mom was a great first start. It helped me plan well and gave me the ability to delegate tasks to my hubby. The recipes from Six Sister’s Stuff were super easy to follow and they were pretty basic ingredients, which meant that I had a lot of the staples already in the pantry.…

Freezer Cooking Day Part 1

So if you follow me on Facebook, you know that this week I’ve been planning a big “freezer cooking” day this Saturday. While this isn’t my first round of preparing things specifically for the purpose of freezing them for later use, this is the biggest and most involved by far. Since some of you had questions and seemed super interested (honestly, I was surprised at how many of you asked great questions or indicated you needed/wanted to know more) I thought I would throw together a couple of quick posts that would let you know how I’ve gone about it. It’ll also give me a chance to answer your questions directly. First of all, please know that while I could recreate the wheel, my goal for the year is to simplify so I have been more than eager to accept help from around the web. Also, recognize that what works for…

Get Creative

Another easy way to save (especially on fresh foods) is to be conscious about not being wasteful. If you spend good money on fresh and organic foods, don’t throw half of it out because it spoiled! Get creative before that happens! We’ve already talked about buying in bulk and freezing, but you should also learn to reinvent your leftovers. Hubby and I are big foodies so we find it fun and relaxing to try to create meals around our leftover ingredients. We’re not always successful (and sometimes we end up tossing half a pepper or something…) but we’re improving! Here are two of our favorite leftover makeovers:Turkey Noodle SoupClick HERE for our Turkey Noodle Soup recipe. It’s great for post Thanksgiving leftovers! Since it’s just the two of us we always have a ton.Ham and Potato SoupClick HERE for our Ham and Potato Soup recipe. When we can get a great deal on…

How to Flash Freeze at Home

Hey y’all! I mentioned last week that I’d be merging the DIY and Cooking blogs together because it made so much more sense (and made for less work really). So today I wanted to share with you one of my money saving tips for produce. If you’re the primary grocery shopper in your household you know that meat and produce (i. e. – fresh fruit and veggies) are the most expensive items on your shopping list. I will totally admit to you that I buy frozen veggies most of the time because they are far more affordable than fresh, but I know that fresh is always best. Still, I have to work within our budget so that tends to limit what I can buy. My first tip for getting fresh veggies into your cart on the cheap would have to be buying when they are in season. Buying corn on the…
